Weihnachten & Neujahr

Hello Everybody,

the last hours that I am in Penang have started and I cant wait to get on the road tonight.

Before I leave I want to wish all of you a great, nice and calm Christmas Season. Enjoy the days with your family and friends.

Since I will only be back on January 2nd 2008 it is time for me already to wish all of you a Happy New Year 2008. I hope all of you have a great night and a good start into the Year of 2008. I wish you all the best for it. May your wishes and plans come true.

Enjoy the Holidays,

Robert

Hari Raya Haji

Thaipusam in Penang

Hallo,

I just found two interesting articels on "Spiegel Online". One is about the relation between the Islam and the western culture and the other one about Thaipusam in Penang. Anybody interested has to find the first one by itself on spiegel.de but for the other on check here:
http://www.spiegel.de/reise/fernweh/0,1518,523764,00.html

I will attend this holiday around February 23rd since it is supposed to be one of the most interesting one. Four days in a row the streets will be filled with people and there are celebrations everywhere. The biggest celebration is probably in KL where around 1 million people gather at the Batu Caves which I have already visited.

Well thats it for some cultural information. Tomorrow will be my last day at work in 2007 and then at night we will be off to KL and for vacation.

All the best,
Robert

Lebensstandard

Hallo liebe Liebenden,

Also zumindest fast nichts.

In diesem Sinne:

Bis bald

Mountain Party...

As all of you can see on the right hand side the "Bergfest" or Mountain party has already passed by. Most of the time here in Asia is already over. Incredible and also Unbelievable.
It seems like I just cam here yesterday. I was never bored here and always on the move and thats probably one big reason why time flew by so fast.
But we have to look ahead and not behind and therefore I want to tell you that i will play some Futsal tomorrow. Football/Soccer for the first time in 3 months since i came here. i am so excited... i just cant hide it.
This is the place where the tournament organised by B. Braun will take place: href="http://www.sportsplanet.com.my/venue_penang.html">
Lets see how good the malay play Futsal. Oh and here are the rules i am not familiar with as well:

Die wichtigsten Futsal-Regeln in der Kurzfassung:

-Spielfeld: Normales Hallenspielfeld ohne Banden

Mannschaftsfoul

-Abwurf auch über die Mittellinie erlaubt

-Einkick (Gegner mindestens 5m Abstand)

-direkte und indirekte Freistöße möglich

So enjoy have a nice weekend and i will tell you how it went.

Totale Flaute. War aber auch sch... Wetter= rauhe See.
So denn

Weihnachtszeit

Premierminister Abdullah Badawi alias "Mr.

Weekend & Xmas Trip

Hello There!

This weekend I went out Friday night to celebrate Jordi’s farewell and it ended early on Saturday morning. Slept in late and spent some time watching “Heores” before we went to Batu Ferringhi to shop for some more DVDs and to check out a tailor for suits. I will definitely get one done here because its 100€ for one and you get to pick everything and they customize it for you. Nice lah.
Afterwards we went to a seafood restaurant and for the first time in my life I ate Lobster. Tastes very good and looks awesome on the table. Also had some raw Oyster on the rocks. Not so good because only tastes like the sauce you put on it. But great anyways.
Later that night I was on the phone and watching some “Heroes” again until the Muezzin called for morning prayers. Somehow I don’t like that guy because I also wake up from his noise a lot of times.
Next day Flo and I did our long planned trip to the East coast of Penang. It was very great because there it is totally different and a lot of nature and small houses and the streets are small and very calm and quite. We also went to stay at a beautiful beach for a while and decided to buy some fishing poles this week so we can go fishing on the weekends. I am excited for that and looking forward to do so next weekend.

Since I found a very nice map of Malaysia on the CIA homepage today I decided to show you where my Christmas trip is going to take me, Thomas and Michael.

Start is Penang then with the Bus to KL where we will stay around two days before flying to Kota Kinabalu from where we will head towards Pulau Sipadan in about a week and later fly back from Tawau to JB next to Singapore where we will spend New Years Eve. On the 1st of January we will fly back to Penang. That’s the trip in short and we will head off in around 3 weeks.

Hope you are all fine.

Demonstration in KL

"KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (CNN) -- Thousands of Hindu protesters met water cannons and tear gas in Malaysia's capital on Sunday while demanding equal rights and consideration from the government.

CNN confirmed at least 5,000 protesters marched in Kuala Lumpur, but The Associated Press placed the figure as high as 10,000.
Some protesters threw rocks at the water cannon trucks, but others were urging peaceful demonstrations.
The AP quoted witnesses who saw people being beaten and dragged into trucks by police.
Public transportation into the city was stopped, hindering protesters from coming in.
Police stopped protesters as they tried to take a petition to the British High Commission. Talks were under way for authorities to allow six protesters to deliver the petition, should the crowd disperse.
The rally -- rooted in complaints that the ethnic Malay Muslim-dominated government discriminates against minorities -- was the largest protest in at least a decade involving ethnic Indians, the country's second-largest minority population after ethnic Chinese.
Ethnic Indians are generally the most underprivileged group in Malaysia.
Earlier this month, riot police used water hoses and tear gas against thousands of protesters demanding electoral reform, the largest demonstration in Kuala Lumpur in nearly a decade.
Street demonstrations are considered rare among the multiple ethnic groups in Malaysia, which prides itself on its communal and political stability.Malaysia has maintained racial peace since 1969, when some 200 people were killed in riots sparked by Malay frustration over the economic clout of Chinese.
The violence spurred the creation of programs that give Malays privileges in government jobs, contracts and education." (http://www.cnn.com/)

Lately...

Only some more minutes and another week passed by. I didn’t post anything about last weekend because it really isn’t worth talking about. It was just plain boring. The fun park was no fun and not comparable to anything in Europe and the Casino was filled with rich Chinese playing some Asian games we didn’t understand. The only thing left to play was Roulette which I think is pretty boring. Well at least I won the money for the trip back and so it was ok. Oh yeah and by the way a can of beer cost 12 RM. The normal price is something around 5RM which is already expensive. But well you can’t always have the weekend of your life.
This week was the first one were I was more or less “on my own” in B. Braun. Pam had her last day on Friday. Therefore I had to go to work with my motorbike every day and I couldn’t waste my precious time going for breakfast or some coffee anymore. Now I actually go for lunch and dinner with my colleagues which is also nice but different.
So starting tomorrow I will also live in a Master Bed Room again because the girls are leaving in the morning to stay in Bali for some weeks where they will sure have a great time! It will be kind of weird to once they are gone for sure because they were the first people I met here and introduced me to a lot of things and showed me around during the first time. THX!!! But know that I am “grown up” and they told me everything they know (Just like in the Kung Fu movies: “I cannot teach you anything anymore my little Kung Fu student, now you can fight the big, mean guy!”) and I am familiar with the place, I think I am able to survive on my own.
On Thursday the HOD of QM had his last day at B. Braun and we were once more invited to a Farewell party during lunch time. He is leaving the company after 22 years, working in Penang for around 10. He started working for them when I was born… funny!
This weekend I might finally end up going to Cameron highlands to see some tea growing but it will be a last minute decision because I will only find out tonight.

By bye lah...Pam and Kathi...

P.S.: Most of the people answered the survey correctly and I am very proud to know so many smart people (9 total) ;-)
Unfortunately I am not able to tell who it was and I can’t reward anyone. There was a flight to Penang to win for the fastest one… but I just don’t know who it was! Sorry!

Different Stuff

Hello!

Since I haven’t posted anything in 4 days and nothing in November yet I figured I had to write something.

This weekend we had a “normal” weekend with nights out at bars Friday and Saturday including a midnight swim in the pool on Friday and two males (including myself) shopping excessively on Saturday afternoon. Even though I didn’t want to go at first but most of the time that’s the best case. So FYI: I bought a great hooded sweater, a swim short (awesome) and four (4) shirts, one of them with a very old German song on it.

Today I accidently tipped an ashtray standing on our balcony which fell down 11 floors and luckily didn’t hit anybody walking by. I just realized some minutes later how lucky I really was not killing anybody!

The rest of the evening today was about planning the next weekend and my next trip during Christmas holidays.

Next Friday we will probably go to Genting to go to the casino and an adventure park. Supposedly the best one in Malaysia but some students just told us that it is not comparable to a park in Europe. It is supposed to be thrilling though as well because you never know about the Malaysian safety regulations. They just don’t have “TÜV Süd” here….

During Christmas I would like to visit Borneo after staying in KL for my birthday. I will see some Orang Utans, maybe hike up Mt. Kinabalu with 4095m the highest spot in Malaysia and dive at Sipadan on of the most beautiful dive spots in the world.

Sabah, Malaysia on Borneo

But the tickets are not booked yet and I have to talk to my “maybe travel partners” about the plans. So we have to see. Decisions have to be made soon though due to Christmas and all the bloody Europeans flying over here to spend nice and warm vacations taking all the hotels. You also have to book the diving in Sipadan ahead of time because only 120 divers are allowed there now due to the damage caused to the reef by invasions of divers in recent years.

Well that’s about it for now. I just have one more information for you: I only work 4 days this week because on Thursday it is a national holiday called “Deepavali”. It’s comparable to Christmas and is celebrated by Indian people. I and some other members of my department are invited to an Indian house on Friday to celebrate with the family.

That’s it for now… I will let you know more about Deepavali tomorrow!!

Deutsches "Kulturgut" in Malaysia

„Oazapft is…!!!“ „Oins, zwoa, gsuffa….“:

Oktoberfest in Malaysia…

Koh Tao, Thailand

On the 11th I flew to Koh Samui which I reached within 80min. On the first day I rented a scooter to run around the island because it is recommended to be done by the “Lonely Planet” looking at all the nice spots. It’s a nice island with a lot of nature and nice places to see. I didn’t really like Chaweng Beach though because there are just to many tourists and everything is like in a western country: McDo, BK, Pizza Hut, Nike and Adidas Stores and a good old “Triumph Laden” from Aalen.
So I decided to leave the island the next day to hit my final destination: Koh Tao.
This is a small island with only 21sqrkm where mostly divers live, work or spend their holidays. I can also suggest non-divers to go there because the beaches are mostly empty with everyone being out in the water.
Luckily I met two Canadians, Andy and Joel, on my way to the Ferry whom I spent the rest of my trip with. As we arrived at the jetty and were able to pass all the taxi drivers and hotel agents we rented scooters to run around the island to find the diving school with the best conditions concerning the quality of accommodation and the diving.
We managed to find a great place in Sairee Beach north of the biggest city Mae Had which was very quiet and calm but still very close to a lot of fun places.
The course started on Sunday afternoon when we watched some movies and went trough all the information again the next morning. That was also the time when we first met our dive instructor: Renate from Berlin. On Monday afternoon we had our first diving experience in the pool that belongs to the school. Breathing underneath the water for the first time wasn’t as different and strange as I heard and thought it was. I actually felt very comfortable with all the gear and didn’t have any problems with the required exercises like clearing the mask, take out the mouthpiece, etc. We had another class the next morning doing chapter 3 and 4 and then we finally went out with the boat to do our first dive in Mango Bay. This is the spot for Newies because the water is very shallow and there aren’t any currents (Strömung) or other distractions. So we went down the line and did some of the exercises again also adding one minute sitting at the bottom without the mask on. By the way, going down the line looks very, very stupid and is not cool at all. I saw some students do it on my fifth day when we went down in a normal descent and I already felt like an experienced diver remembering myself that I had done it only some days earlier myself.
The next morning we went on our first morning dive which started at 6am and took us to Chumpon Pinnacles where we saw some reef sharks 10m below us because at that time we were not allowed to go below 18m. There was also a small Whale Shark with only 5m length there but I didn’t see it. But Renate who dived her dive nr. 2000 with us hasn’t seen one yet as well so I think I am still doing fine with my 9 dives. This dive was the reason for all of us to go on and finish the “Advanced Open Water Course” to be able to go down there and swim with the sharks. This was not the only reason to go on though because you also get to do night, photography and other more interesting dives as well as some more knowledge in orientation and underwater nature. So we did 5 more dives, the best ones taking place on the last day going down to the sharks and taking pictures and swimming on the reef for about 50min. By then I also felt very comfortable with the gear and everything and so I was really able to enjoy myself down there and also had the buoyancy (Tarierung) thing figured out and so I was able to get close to the reef without harming it.
So I can tell you that diving is something totally different and a great experience that should not be missed! There are so many things to see down there and floating over a reef is something very special.
As you can imagine having tow Canadians and a German staying together we also did some partying together even though we only went out twice because the other nights we were just too tired or had morning dives the next day. But we did go to the “Lotus Beach Bar” and the boys also showed me a nice Thai Drink called “Sangsom Red Bull with Soda” very nice lah!! Sangsom is some kind of Thai Whiskey or Rum, I don’t really know! At the bar Andy also spit fire about 10m high in the air and had never done it before. (See picture) The thing is they use normal gasoline here to do it so I suppose it’s not a good idea to swallow it ;-)
Well anyway I had a really great time and made some awesome experiences I will never forget!
When I came back here on Saturday night I had to go to the “Oktoberfest” organized by the German Malaysian Society right away because everybody else was already waiting there for me. It was a very nice party and Julia came especially for this from KL. The “Inntaler Musikanten” didn’t give their best though and could have pepped up the party a little bit more. I am also very sad that taxes on imported alcohol are so high and therefore a bottle of “Paulaner Weissbier” cost 25RM and we were forced to drink the good old Tiger beer.
I went eating indish and showed Julia and Heiko the Kek Lok Si Temple on Sunday before they left. And that’s it for now… I am back at work and now will start with it as well!! During this week I might write some more details about my trip and will also add the pictures. But I took about 400 normal and about 250 underwater pictures so it will take a bit to work on them!

Pulau Langkawi

Hallo!

This week the weekend report comes one day later than usual but I really didn’t feel like writing a long text yesterday. I hope you will all excuse me for doing so. I had a really long and rough weekend going to Pulau Langkawi with Florian and Thomas and also joining a friend from work going to an Indian club on Friday night.
We started out going to this club near Batu Ferringhi on Friday where they only played Indian music and the three of us were the only non-Indian people. The music was like the one some of you might know from the Bollywood movies. Rather different for the European ear but still fun to listen to and also totally different and interesting and therefore a good choice. We really had a great night and of course were dancing after a short while. The next day Thillai (who had come home at around 5am instead of us going home at 3am) woke all of us up to go to the Jetty. That’s the place called where the ferries leave and therefore it’s a rather important word to know around here since traveling with ferries is quite common. So we managed to drive to Georgetown, buy the tickets and go to the Jetty in about 25min! Don’t ask me how because normally it takes you 25min just to get to GT. But as Thillai always says: “We’ll manage!”
Being on the Ferry was really nice and we thought we could relax a little and get some sleep… Stupid foreigners! The ferry was small and the waves were high. You do the math. It didn’t take a long time until most of the people were sick including myself but after I had cleared out my stomach I was able to sleep and did so until we arrived in Kuah (“capital” of Langkawi) 2,5h later.
As we arrived there we where of course surrendered by taxi drivers within seconds but managed to find a nice one after eating something who was supposed to drive us to the hotel. After three minutes he already started to offer us an island trip and after some more minutes he had us convinced to do so. It was actually the right choice even though now I think we could have gotten it cheaper. Anyway he drove us to a waterfall, the nice beaches up north, to the cable car built by “Doppelmayr” in the western part of the island and later to the hotel where we arrived at around 3pm. After checking in we went right to the beach which was about 5m away from the entrance door of our Bungalow. The beach, as you can see on the pictures, was very nice with palm trees and everything but the water is not really great. We stayed there the rest of the day allowing us some beers (which cost 1,5RM a can), relaxing and talking. For dinner we went to a Seafood restaurant picked out some fishes (they were already dead) and enjoying them with some fried rice and vegetables. Very nice lah. After that we went to the “Reggae Bar”, the “Sunny Café” and to “Debbies” at last. All places not filled with a lot of people and 90% of them being male. So Thomas and I decided to finish off the day at the beach enjoying once more the leisure of duty free beer and sitting in the warm water with some chairs looking at the stars in the sky! It was really perfect…
The next morning we woke up at around noon and decided to get some breakfast close by. As we arrived at the “Breakfast Bar” it started to rain very heavily and so we stayed there for a while enjoying very nice coffee and talking to two Germans who work for the “Moto GP” traveling around the world at least 9 months a year. It sounded really interesting and exciting what they get to see during their job but doing this for 30 years like one of them sounds crazy to me.
Anyway we finished the day with some Duty Free shopping in Kuah (I found “Weihenstephaner” Weißbier) and waiting for the ferry. By the way they show ripped movies filmed in theaters on the ferry which I think is very funny and not imaginable in Europe.
Yesterday, Monday, I bought myself a 75 liter backpack to be able to travel to Thailand and other places later on and also got my bike fixed by one of our night guards because I was not able to start the bike anymore.
Tonight I will give it to him again and then he will repair and fix everything else: oil, brakes, lights mudguard… Then I can finally start to ride it on a regular basis.
Since it is already Tuesday morning there is only one more day between me being in Thailand I am very excited and cannot believe it yet, just coming back from a great trip to Langkawi.
I hope you are all doing fine and congrats to the “Ersten” on winning another game in a great way!! Keep up the good work, as people would say here.

Wish you all the best
Robert

A normal Tuesday

Also die Flüge halt.

Nicht schlecht was?!?

Goodbye :-( Anna & Snake Temple

Hi everyone!
Well it’s Monday morning and therefore time again to share my weekend with you...
Friday night we celebrated Anna’s farewell by going to an Italian restaurant somewhere in Penang. Somehow taxi drivers always find their way to locations I have never been to and cannot remember how I got there afterwards. Just an amazing phenomen. The street architecture here is still kind of confusing to me. I hope this will change within the next weeks since I own a bike now and will be driving more on my own!
Anyway, as I was saying we went to this Italian restaurant with this “real” Italian owner and the food was just great. It really tasted like in Europe. The wine was really fine too but also very strong as I was about to find out just a little bit later…
After that we went into GT (Georgetown) center to go to Sohos first and then later on to SS. It was really a fun night even though we celebrated Anna’s farewell.
Saturday morning was rather hard to get out of bed and I thought that somebody must have put some alcohol in my coke and orange juice which I had all night (except the wine)!! But we are only here once in a lifetime and therefore we headed to Gurney Plaza another mall on Penang on the opposite site of GT. It took us about 50min to get there because traffic on Saturday is no fun… After we made it up to the 5th floor in the parking house going circles in a tower like this: round, round, round, round, round, round, round, round, round, round, round round, round, round round, round and feeling really sick we entered yet another shopping paradise (as women would probably call it). Since I was again not able to find anything in there except a shirt to work out I definitely don’t like them anymore! But they had good Mexican food at “Chili’s” and so I was after all also satisfied ;-)
Next day we had an American breakfast at the “Sunny Café” and Flo and I went to the Snake Temple afterwards. On the way there we stopped at a gas station to ask for directions but couldn’t drive off again event though the engine worked. A worker of the gas station told us that the brake on the back tire was stuck. But no problem here!! The guy just got out a hammer, loosened the brake and fixed a loose part with a small rope. After that we were not able to use the back brake anymore but could drive off without any problem.Robert and Cobra

In the Snake Temple there was really nothing to see and the first time we entered we were not even able to find a single snake! So we went into the Sake Farm next to it expecting it to be a tourist rip off with nothing to see. Turned out that the owner was very interested in snakes and also in telling us everything about them. She followed us everywhere and explained us almost every snake and also put all the different animals into our hands and told us to hold them and take pictures. Really nice! Snakes feel really great and very strong. When you touched them once you know what I am talking about. The cobra on the one picture still has her venomous fangs and that’s the closest they would let me sit next to it. But if you don’t come any closer they won’t harm you because when they do its only because you scared them. It was very interesting and taking all the pictures also worth the money. The little fellow in my hands is a baby “Sugar Glider” (I wasn’t able to find out the German name yet). It’s the one who can fly from one three to another with “wings” (skin) underneath his arms.
Alright that’s it for now and I will soon post some pics of Friday night once I capture them from other people.

Stammtisch

Hello again!!

Today I will tell you about the „Stammtisch“ on Tuesday.B.Braun Stammtisch Pokal
As I mentioned you earlier we went to an Indian restaurant which turned out to be not only a restaurant but also a cultural meeting point where children learn traditional dances and Indian celebrations etc take place. The restaurant is also not run by “professionals” (probably the cooks are though) but by volunteers who give their time as a donation to the Indian society. The idea of donation is also reflected in the way of payment: Since there are no prices in the menu the customer can give whatever he/she thinks it’s appropriate for the meal.
I first ordered a Masala tea aka Chai tea following my routine here always not knowing what I will receive. It tasted really different to any tea I drank so far because it has some spicy flavor in it.
Masala Tea
The food later on tasted also great and consisted of numerous tiny little bowls with different sauces and vegetables in them. It was of course served with flavored rice and some kind of pancake/bread that seemed to be made out of semolina (Grieß) I haven’t had before.
After the meal which was by the way only attended by three people (the “big bosses” had an important meeting) Pam and I decided to end the evening at TGI Fridays with a drink. It was really nice there and Chan the barkeeper was really a great entertainer.
For the weekend I don’t really have plans yet except for the farewell party for Anna on Friday. What we are trying to organize right now is a fishing trip with a boat because another trainee said that it’s possible to do here and is supposedly rather cheap. We will see!

Proudly present: The "Iron" King

Hey There!

I have to tell you something about yesterday… Some really funny things happened after work. When I went to the gym with Pam I decided that my neck felt not good and wanted to get a massage after working out. When I went there though they told me that I could only get one for an hour. I only had half an hour because then Pam would be done with her workout on the bike so I told her I didn’t have an hour. So she said she couldn’t do anything for me and after asking twice again I left the room. That’s really funny because normally people here are so friendly and I thought would definitely be able to change from an hour to half of it just to make some money.
After that I went home and for the first time in my life ironed some clothes. As Pam told me this morning I didn’t make any major mistakes except that I should iron black pants inside out so they don’t get white marks. I am really proud of myself that I was able to do it. Even though it is very easy I will not start to iron now. It still takes to much time and its just plain boring.
At night we watched Rambo II which Flo bought on the night market on Saturday. Really great movie to watch with 4 guys and some beers!
Tonight we will go to a “Stammtisch” which will probably consist of 4 people and takes place in an Indian vegetarian restaurant. So I guess it will not be comparable at all to one in Germany. But we will see.

SS&MonkeyBeach

Good Morning!

It’s Monday morning and I am back at work. Actually this is my fourth week already. Quite a long time event though it doesn’t feel like it at all. This morning it was raining very heavily again after we didn’t have any rain for about a week! Yesterday I spent the afternoon with some other Germans at the pool just chilling, talking and a little bit of swimming of course. Later I went to play my first match of Badminton which is something like the national sport in Malaysia. It was me an Andrej against a Chinese Dad and his son. Actually Andrej is very good and the Chinese evidently just started to play as well and so we won every set. Afterwards I played single against Andrej and got my a… kicked. I was already really tired and the field kept getting bigger and bigger! I am definitely out of shape. So I will go to the gym right away after work today.
Friday night/ evening, since we already went out at 9pm, all the students and other Europeans from Sunnyville and E-Park went to the SS (Slippery Senoritas)
Before the SS
because somebody had managed a deal with the owner to drink cheaper until 10pm. The deal went very well for the owner then of course nobody left after 10pm and we all stayed until the club filled up shortly before 11pm. But it was a great night with a lot of fun. Since we didn’t eat anything before we left the house we also told Jordi (my Spanish Roommate) something about the German culture: “Sieben Bier sind auch ein Schnitzel”! In English this might sound something like: “Seven Beer are also a Steak” so you don’t need anything to eat! But at a certain point we were all very hungry and we went to the Burger Stand in front of Soho (another club)! They make the best Burger here and the most expensive one is 5RM. So I think that’s a deal! The Burgers are not only very fresh and contain a nice amount of ketchup, mayonnaise and a chili sauce but the beef is also surrounded by an egg. I think you can see that on one picture! It is really great!
The next day, for some reason I still don’t know, we all had some hard time to get up before we had the great idea to see the National Park (“Taman Negara” in Malay) here in Penang. We wanted to see the Monkey Beach supposedly the most beautiful beach in Penang but as I already told you the water here is not very clean and so are the beaches. We (Jordi, Flo, Dominik and I) drove the 50min to the entrance of the park and started hiking. I know that it is hot here but this day hiking trough the jungle was really hard. After around 20min all of our shirts were totally wet. I am sorry that I am telling you this right now but it is something that is also very different than being in a “European climate zone”. In this climate you (that’s my experience) are not just sweating at the normal body parts like head or arm pits. Here every single part of your body is sweating! Within a short period of time you are totally wet on your arms as well as on your legs! It’s really different and you just have to accept and cope with it.
Anyway in the middle of the walk we saw a monkey in front of us and we all took our cameras out to take some pictures and all the sudden we were surrounded by the whole family of about 8 or 10 monkeys. They came closer and we definitely were scared of them and went out there very fast. As we arrived on the beach it was sure very nice with palm trees growing right next to it and only a few people there. The sand wasn’t very clean though and some people were riding jet skis and water-ski which made a lot of noise. Anyway I went swimming in the really warm water a little bit but as I told you before it was not very clean.
After we arrived at the car we went to Batu Ferringhi to the Night Market where I bought a lot of DVDs, Shirts, a swimming pants and a hat.
Well that’s it more or less for this weekend. Please fell free to leave some comments in the Blog (there are only 2 up to now) or write me an email.

I wish you all the best for this new week!

One day at Work

Today I want to show you in a short way a normal working day here in Penang. Ok, there will be some changes soon since Anna will be only two more days with us :-(
But here we go...
We meet every morning at 6.45am to be able to clock in at 7am.

After that we have a wonderful sundawn which I took this pic of right in front of the entrance to my office:
After that we went to production today and Anna showed me the project I will take over from here. But than it is lunch time and I had a great TomYan Soup that Pam suggested because it is her favourite. Thank you Pam!!
After lunch we always have some really nice and fresh fruits that you can buy here very cheap all day long from fruit stands!! Anna is eating Mango here at the moment! And normally eat Pineapple and HoneyDew. Just so you know but there is also Watermelons, Apples, Oranges, Papayas and other fruits that I don't even know yet.

After this its only abotu three more hours of work which normally fly by very fast! Before we go home at 4.40pm sharp!!!

W&W

After

Before

As there might be some doubters that I don’t work here since there are only pictures of me traveling and sightseeing I decided to prove the difference to you.
As I told you before most of the production here is under clean room conditions and therefore we have to wear jumpsuits and covers. So you can see me as I am dressed up in the office and afterwards in production. This is actually the normal way to dress up here: either a polo or a “dress” shirt. So the first day of work when I came dressed up in my jacket and tie everybody was looking at me like I am an alien from outer space. But they are used to the crazy Germans doing this and so they don’t really care.
Oh by the way, I was told yesterday, that rumors are flowing around that I look like Prince William… Don’t know where that comes from so I posted a picture of him and me here…. Please update me on your thoughts! I would like to know if only the Asian people think that way or if there is some truth to it. I am a little bit scared because he is already getting bold…and of course I party way better than he does!!

William

Robert

Alright I wish you a nice Wednesday and all the supporters of VfB Stuttgart a victory tonight.

Kuala Lumpur

Good Morning!
I’m back at work! After a great weekend in KL I am sitting at my desk again writing down the last two days while I am waiting until my “Familiarization Program” starts at 9am. I will learn more about Quality Management and the Processes involved with it during the next two days. The girls say its just boring and nothing to learn but I will see.
Alright then: Friday I stayed at work until 5.30pm which is one hour more than I am supposed to work. This happened to me because I went to production after lunch without really knowing what we were going to do. Well I found out that we were going to validate a machine for two hours. You know the rest… But somehow it was also good because I drove home with the motorbike/scooter during the 10min it didn’t rain that afternoon.
At 8pm Dominik came over and we watched the Simpsons movie until we left the house and went to the bus station by taxi. By then it rained so heavy that we were really scared that it would ruin the whole weekend.
As I already told you we bought the expensive tickets and we were really impressed how great it was! It was a normal size bus but only 18 seats in it. That means that there are 6 rows with 3 seats in each. The seats are the size of business or first class seats in an airplane and after watching “X Men 3” I slept the whole trip. We arrived at Puduraya Bus station in KL at 4.55am which surprised us a little bit because we were told that the trip could last from 4.5h until 6h. To arrive exactly after 4.5h, the shortest amount of time given is not usual here.
After asking some taxi drivers where to go we found our hostel (Green Hut Lodge) at around 6am and at the Petronas Twin Towers at 6.30am. You can get free tickets to walk on the SkyBridge between them but since it was a weekend and there are only around 1000 pieces a day we were told to be there early. But 6.30am was definitely too early and so we went to an Indian restaurant to get some Roti Canai with Bananas for Breakfast. We went back in line afterwards and were able to receive tickets for the second elevator at 9.15am after watching a Petronas commercial movie. But hey it was in 3D!!! (And the glasses looked exactly like my sunglasses; so somebody asked me later if I had stolen them inside!)
The view from SkyBridge was quite impressive because you can see the entire city but since it is the most magnificent building in town there isn’t much else to see, except maybe the KL tower ( Fernsehturm), so it was not bad at all that we had to leave after only some minutes up there. After we went outside again and taking the obligatory pictures in front of the towers we decided to start our sightseeing tour. Luckily we passed a sightseeing bus (KL HopOn-HopOff) and decided to enter since it was only 17RM for students. We passed several buildings and important spots of the city like the National Mosque (which we were not able to enter due to prayers), Chinatown with the Indian Sri MaraMariaman Temple, Lake Gardens with a Bird and Butterfly Park, the National Museum, KL Sentral (Train Station) and of course Merdeka (Independence) Square. Except the last one with an impressive and supposedly largest flagpole in the world the spots were not really interesting.
We were back at the hostel at around 5pm and met with Julia (a girl from my college doing her internship in KL) at 6pm to have dinner. Afterwards we went to the Twin Towers again to see them lit up at night. After taking some more pics we went to the Beach Club which is located in the “biggest” party street in KL. It was quite interesting there then besides being an interesting Club/Bar it is also a pickup point for hookers. So at a certain area there will be the lonely “white guys” and they are being followed by many Asian girls with rather gigantic breasts compared to the rest of their body.
Yeah and of course there was a live band playing again and the lead singer looked like one of the guys from Lordi but was singing backup for songs from Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas and Shakira.
Next morning we had breakfast at 11am and went to the Batu Caves later on. In my lonely planet it says that it should cost 20RM one way but since we made the experience earlier that you cannot bargain with taxi (teksi in malay) drivers we paid 70RM for both ways. We still don’t know if it was a rip-off or if everybody pays that.
Well anyway the Caves with the 272 steps to get up there, all the monkeys and of course the 65m golden statue of an Indian God or something were really impressive. The cave is around 100m high and during Thaipusam in January one million Indian people from all over the world gather there.
Back in town we decided to see the biggest Mall called “Times Square” which is even more impressive and bigger than the “Mall of America” in Minneapolis. It’s a 12 floor Mall with around 900 shops, three cinemas (including one IMAX), an amusement park from the 5th to the 10th floor with a rollercoaster that included a loop and something like a freefall tower.
Our bus was supposed to leave at 4.30pm and so we had to get back to the bus station but the bus didn’t leave until one hour later and it took us quite long until we finally arrived in Pulau Pinang at around 10pm. The bus was rather old and had to struggle very hard at every little hill. The seats though were also very comfortable and big and so a nice trip took a good end!
In the end it was a really nice and interesting trip even though the sightseeing spots were rather boring. I hope you all enjoy the pictures and can see that we really had a great time.
I wish you a great start into the new week and hope everybody is doing fine.

All the best from B.Braun 5 (the building I am sitting in)
